stagnant energy is a bit like invisible dust... if you were to regularly walk through an empty room that is never cleaned, dust would collect near the walls and become particularly concentrated in the corners of the room. energy works in much the same way: in an uncleansed room, stagnant energy will generally be perceived as a thick layer 'clinging' to the walls, floor, and ceiling, with denser pockets in the corners. (when katherine uses her hands to sense this type of stagnant energy, it often feels a bit like fine cobwebs...)

all of us have had experiences in perceiving energy, even if we've used other terms to describe it. for example, most of us have at some point walked into a home or building and remarked that it felt very warm and inviting or, to the contrary, that it seemed to have a so-called 'bad vibe'... regardless of the attractiveness of the space. we have many receptors for detecting shifts in energy, including: sensory (hot/cold or tingling sensations), auditory (often perceived as a ringing in the ears), corporal (goose bumps, breathing change), and emotional (a sudden feeling of sadness, happiness, anger, etc).

in everyday english vernacular, there are many expressions that refer to the feeling and presence of energy, such as 'the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife' and 'home is where the heart is.' even our traditional 'house-warming party' is a modern ritual for bringing good fortune to the inhabitants of a new home, and stems from the ancient tradition of holding blessing ceremonies in times of transition and movement.
