instinctive feng shui™ : history

the art and practice of feng shui originated in china over 4,000 years ago and, since then, a number of branches have emerged to adapt this ancient wisdom to changing times and evolving ways of life.

instinctive feng shui (the system developed and taught by denise linn) is based largely on the principles of black hat feng shui, a hybrid that has its origins in the spread of buddhism from india through tibet to china and is probably the most widespread branch of feng shui practiced in the united states. instinctive feng shui also incorporates many principles of form school feng shui, a method that places emphasis on examining the shape of the land and optimizing the flow of 'chi' in an environment.

the unique gift of instinctive feng shui is that, in addition to the benefits of traditional feng shui, it also honors the needs of our souls. it is based on the same innate understanding that ancient people throughout the world had about the natural forces that shaped their world. they understood that healing came from within, that disease ('dis-ease') was an external expression of inner imbalances that could be remedied by coming back into harmony with oneself, one's family, one's tribe, and the earth. those ancient masters also understood the intimate connection that exists between humans and their personal environments; the energy of the home was thus used as a tool for healing and transformation.

as noted by denise linn, 'by combining the best of ancient knowledge with the depths of intuition, instinctive feng shui assists us in discovering our place in the great web of life. it helps us unfold the mystery of who we are, why we are here, and how we can best live on the planet. instinctive feng shui is based on love, not fear; it emphasizes what is right about a person's [space], rather than what is wrong. one of its basic tenets is that if it feels good, it's good feng shui.' (note: please see site credits for information on books by denise linn.)

no one type of feng shui is 'better' than another and each offers a multitude of benefits. when choosing a method or practitioner, it is important to listen to one's heart and allow oneself to be drawn to the approach that most resonates with one's personal philosophies. we each instinctively know what is most appropriate for our space and for our own personal growth.
